Many people—by which I mean my wife and my mother-in-law—frequently ask me “Well what do you believe, you who are always making snide, sardonic and sarcastic remarks about everybody else’s religion?”
To which I reply—how the hell should I know? How do I know, for example, that my beliefs weren’t implanted in my brain by beings from the THX 1138 spiral galaxy that time I was abducted by aliens? How do I know I even exist, as opposed to being something dreamed up by a supreme being while it was taking a Sunday afternoon nap? This is what an introductory course in philosophy will do to an impressionable young mind.
Still, even though I am anti-clerical, I am not without a sense of the divine. I took to religious instruction as a young boy in Catholic grade school like a duck to water, and won a little plastic statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary three years running; like the Gretzky-era Edmonton Oilers, I was an unstoppable juggernaut, to invoke another crazy religious practice mocked in this work.
Further, I have always enjoyed religious controversies since they are so—insoluble. I’m the product of a slightly mixed marriage, Protestant and Catholic, whose adherents have settled down to a low-grade competition after centuries of killing each other over theological differences so slight you could slip them between two angels dancing on the head of a pin. Sometimes when I read of fatal religious strife in a distant part of the globe between two sects for which I have no particular affection I think God created religion as a herd-thinning device for mere mortals. Or “gods,” since I remain unconvinced that monotheism is an improvement over the multiple qualified vendors that polytheism provides.
So settle back, relax and thank whatever supreme being(s) you believe in that you don’t have to shake hands and talk with me at some tedious coffee hour after Sunday human sacrifice.
